On Thursday, November 5, Eller MBA Programs hosted its first Mix + Mingle event in downtown Phoenix inside the Virginia Piper Auditorium at the UA’s College of Medicine. A total of 62 students and alumni attended the evening event, which featured cocktails, appetizers and a chance to meet with recruiters from Shamrock Foods, Systems Evolution, Inc., and Sunquest.

Jen Maiorany, UA Eller’s director of MBA Career Management said the Mix + Mingle event was intended to provide current MBA students with the opportunity to interact with MBA alumni and employers.

“Networking is key to the career management process, and we’re constantly encouraging students to build their professional network. To this end, one of the key roles of MBA Career Management is to help students build their professional networks by arranging and hosting events like the Mix and Mingle,” Maiorany said.

The Mix + Mingle was tailgate-themed to provide some more fun, unique options for students, alumni, and employers to engage with each other.

Mike Langley, UA Eller’s associate director, MBA Admissions & Corporate Outreach, said the event was well-received and similar events will be planned in 2016.

“For many of our Eller MBA grads, the network they develop will be the most important aspect of their studies. Not only will they have the opportunity to create lifelong relationships with their classmates, there’s the potential for them to become future business partners with one another moving forward. We understand this, and that’s the reason we’re so committed to fostering these connections,” Langley said.

Events like this also help recruiters and Tucson-based Sunquest Information Systems, Inc. took advantage of the chance to meet students and alumni in the Phoenix market.

“The Eller MBA Mix and Mingle event gave us an opportunity to connect with students in a more casual environment than your traditional career fair,” said Brooke Reid, Sunquest’s talent acquisition specialist. “Because it was an intimate event, we were able to spend more time getting to know each student and give them a better feel for our company’s culture.  I saw many of the same students at a job fair a few weeks later and had the chance to catch up with them again.  Sunquest’s continued relationship with Eller is so valuable in that it allows us to establish strong connections with very talented students, whether they are in their first year or a few weeks away from graduation.”

Alejandro Rios is an Eller advisory board member who received a B.S. in Finance from the UA in 2000 and graduated from Eller’s EMBA program in 2006.
