Eller MBA ’14
Seven of the 54 members of the 2014 Eller Full-Time MBA class have military experience in their background, but Lieutenant Joseph Weisberger maintains that commitment full-time in addition to his school duties.
Weisberger, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a degree in mechanical engineering, is a surface warfare officer and Naval recruiting officer stationed in Tucson, as well as a first-year MBA candidate. He said he was drawn to the UA by its national ranking and proximity to his duty station.
“I’m a career switcher, and I want to transition from a life as a Naval officer to a career in finance,” Weisberger explained. “Part of the reason I picked my orders for Tucson was to attend Eller and be part of a nationally ranked and rising MBA program.”
Weisberger has served in several roles throughout his career, including serving as operations officer for MCM Crew Bulwark, fire control officer/visit board search and seizure officer onboard USS Bunker Hill, and plans and exercise officer for Commander Task Force 56 in the Middle East. He graduated from Navy Nuclear Power School, and he currently serves as the Southern Arizona officer recruiter and division officer of enlisted recruiting, overseeing 22 sailors around the local Tucson area. He feels his military background and education prepared him well for the rigors of an MBA program.
“Critical thinking is the most important aspect of being a Naval officer,” Weisberger said. “I was regularly involved in operations supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, as well as briefing admirals and other senior military leaders on expeditionary operations and contingency plans.”
Weisberger plans to graduate with a dual MBA and master’s in finance degree, and he is pursuing a career in private equity or investment management services.
