Five undergraduate students from Pam Perry’s MGMT 496Z University Management class spent time in Las Vegas in February at a business-to-business apparel tradeshow, gathering information for three consulting projects they are completing for the UA BookStores and Original Retro Brand.
They met with Eller alum Marc Herman, owner of Original Retro Brand, as well as tradeshow leader Advanstar, which gave them a behind-the-scenes look at an event of this scale.
Management senior Matthew Garten is manager for one of the projects. “My project involves bringing Original Retro Brands and the Rock the Vote campaign together,” he said. “Original Retro Brands wants to design shirts that include both logos, as well as the University of Arizona logo.”
Garten’s project also includes running a Rock the Vote campaign, aimed at registering first-time voters. ”My group wants to have everything planned out for the launch of the Rock the Vote designs and have a committee completely formed for the campaign come September,” he said. “Having everything organized and ready to go is the highest priority.”
A meeting with Herman and Original Retro Brand’s marketing manager, Cassidy Moore, gave the team the best understanding of the company. “They are able to stay ahead of the game because they can design something today and have it produced by tomorrow,” he said. “They are open to anything when it comes to promoting their brand at the UA. We received great insight into the apparel industry and how Retro sets itself apart with comfortable and durable clothing.”
As he prepares to graduate, Garten credits the class with giving him important, hands-on experience. “This is great class to have right before graduating, because we are dealing with a real situation that has to have a real solution,” he said.
