By Monique Rios, ECSC President
Eller College Student Council (ECSC) serves as a liaison between the students, faculty, and staff within the Eller College. My first leadership role within ECSC was organizing the Eller College Cares team for the College, and I will be forever grateful to those upperclassmen who trusted me with this position. I have had the pleasure of serving in more formal leadership roles within Council every year since then including: Career Development Chair, Executive Vice President, and, currently, President.
As with being the president of any group or organization, this role for Council has been a unique and fun challenge for me. Striking the balance between the organization’s core values and traditions that got it this far and enacting change that will continue to take it into the future has been an interesting project. Lucky for me, ECSC is made up of close to 30 strong student leaders. While I enjoy the thought that I have acquired some wisdom throughout my time in Eller, these fellow leaders who I meet with every Wednesday have continued to challenge and teach me.
Recently, I have started to realize that my time with ECSC has come full circle. I am now charged with the task of seeking out the members who will see ECSC into the future. It has been an absolute pleasure to seek out potential new leaders for ECSC over the past year, and trust these new members just as the veteran members before had trusted me. I sincerely hope that one day these emerging leaders will continue to pay it forward.
Until we hold elections later this semester, it is my job to see that the Eller College Student Council remains the prestigious organization that it is while simultaneously helping to provide an enriching experience for all members. My biggest responsibility is to ensure that ECSC continues to enact positive change around the Eller College and Tucson community. While there are several events that Council oversees throughout the year, my personal favorites are Be Heard Week, Eller College Cares through Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure, and Senior Class Gift.
In our most recent project, Eller College Student Council in conjunction with the Eller Undergraduate Office has been working on getting new Eller merchandise sold at our upcoming convocation ceremony (May 13th) and online to benefit the Senior Class Gift fund, an account that is used to better the student experience at Eller. Suggestions regarding improvements to Eller, more information on each ECSC event, and application information can be found on our website, www.ellercollegestudentcouncil.com.
