Change is a constant at the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship, which just launched a new initiative to equip all Eller College graduates with an entrepreneurial experience. The McGuire Center is also re-launching its McGuire Experience website, which will feature fresh content from the class of 2011 as students complete their intensive, year-long venture process this spring.
Two staffers – one new, one who started at the Center in a different role – will help shepherd these projects to fruition.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation Requirement
The McGuire Center’s flagship program – an intensive, year-long experience culminating in a showcase and competition – will remain limited to 100 students selected from a rigorous application process. But through an innovative plan to more deeply imbed an entrepreneurial mindset in students graduating the Eller College, ten times as many students will be exposed to the Center’s top-ranked expertise in entrepreneurship education.
The freshmen class admitted in fall 2010 is the first class of students who must complete a three-credit Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EI) requirement as part of their Eller College experience. The EI requirement could be fulfilled through existing stand-alone courses, such as Principles of Entrepreneurship,Innovation Principles and Environments, and Corporate Entrepreneurship, or through a new, large lecture course aimed at pre-business sophomores that focuses on entrepreneurial dimensions of science. The new course is under development for launch in fall 2011.
Wayne Jewett has been appointed as the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Initiative Concierge in the McGuire Center to help these and other students from all areas of the University of Arizona navigate their options in entrepreneurship and find the course that will best fit their interests.
The McGuire Experience
In spring of 2010, the McGuire Center launched an interactive website designed to lift the veil on the process of venture development. The website, www.mcguireexperience.com, is a showcase for the 20+ ventures that make up the program, and the students behind the ventures. Through videos, profiles, blog entries, and more, the site offered unprecedented access to the student experience in the top-ranked program.
The site is under redesign for 2011 under the leadership of Daron Shade, who joined the McGuire Center in December as media, design, and technology manager. Watch eller buzz for McGuire Experience updates—and for new media-enabled initiatives from the McGuire Center!
